Priscilla Ahn: Tonight I Covered ‘Julia’
March 1, 2010
For those of you who were still awake last Tuesday at around 3 a.m., it began as a simple Facebook post by Priscilla Ahn, the 26-year-old alternative folk singer/composer/nymph who’s gift is a voice so siren-like, so tonally pure and delicate, so enchanting and sweet that it paints pictures and induces mind wander.
“Tonight I covered ‘Julia,’” was Ahn’s brief 3 a.m. note which included a YouTube URL.
Then, 20 minutes later, she posted again.
“Hmm, actually I think it looks better here on my blog.”
It was like finding treasure. Here’s Priscilla’s foreword:
Today was a beautiful, crisp, windy day. When I looked outside there was a big morning moon hanging so delicately in the sky. It made me think of my favorite Beatles’ song, “Julia”. I realized I didn’t have the song in my computer though, and crazy enough, The White Album isn’t available to purchase on iTunes! (There’s something I sort of like about that though.)
So I decided to cover it. It only took me 30 minutes, and it was simply to satisfy the “fix” I needed to hear, sing, and play this song. You can hear a lot of lip smacking, and a lot of unfinished ‘ideas’ of harmonies…
I’ve put the song to a bunch of tour videos (some of these clips were taken by my friend Wendy Wang). I’ve been collecting over the past 3 years. I didn’t try to synch anything up. These are just randomly chosen clips that I really like. (sigh…) I’ve come to terms with the fact that I am just not a perfectionist, and I never will be. So take it as you will. I hope you enjoy it. Love, p. ahn
