OMAHA—The defending NCAA champion Oregon State Beavers punished the highly touted Arizona State pitching staff to move a step closer to their second consecutive appearance in the finals here at the College World Series beating the Sun Devils 12-6.
The surging Beavers were led by the Asian American tandem of freshman second baseman Joey Wong and slugging sophomore DH Jason Ogata, who each banged out three hits against an ASU staff that features Hawaiian southpaw standout Josh Satow who came in to relieve starter Brian Flores in the second inning. Although Satow was bombed for six runs, Flores took the loss, only his second in 13 decisions.
OSU will next play on Wednesday at 4 p.m. PDT against the winner of Tuesday evening’s game between ASU and Califoria-Irvine. UC-Irvine (46-16-1) or ASU (49-14) would have to beat the Beavers Wednesday and then again Thursday to keep them out of the best-of-three championship round that starts Saturday against the winner of the other bracket.
